It might make sense to think that our default behavior, or perhaps just that which we revert to in times of stress, is our ”true self,” but I think that’s just an ·easier· assessment. Sure, there’s all kinds of pithy ‘dichos’ about taking the measure of a man, but I think perhaps understanding someone else, or even ourselves, requires a lot more thought and compassion than we are normally willing to spend. Or at least, than I’m willing to spend, most of the time.
In short, I think most people might be looking for predictability rather than actual understanding of another person.
